IraqiNews.com/Baghdad The Iraqi Parliament announced on Monday that it will convene on May 18 to choose a new speaker to succeed Muhammad Al-Halbousi, who was the outgoing speaker.
Muhammad Al-Halbousi, the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, had his tenure terminated by the Federal Supreme Court in mid-November.
Following a lawsuit filed by MP Laith Al-Dulaimi charging Al-Halbousi of falsification, a ruling was made.
Al-Dulaimi’s term was likewise decided to terminate by the court. The court’s rulings are final and cannot be challenged.
The country’s president is a Kurd, the speaker of parliament is a Sunni, and the prime minister is a Shiite since the 2005 constitution was adopted in the aftermath of Saddam Hussein.
Since the Iraqi court’s decision, First Deputy Speaker Mohsen Al-Mandalawi has presided over the legislature.
Speaker of the House of Commons Al-Halbousi assumed office on September 15, 2018. As the youngest Speaker of Parliament in Iraqi history, he is also the first to be re-elected to the position.
