According to North Korean media on Sunday, Choe Thae Bok, a well-known official who worked for three generations of the nation’s top leaders, passed away at the age of ninety-three. Choe, who presided over the Supreme People’s Assembly for more than 20 years and served as the ruling Workers’ Party’s secretary for international affairs, passed away from a heart attack.
Choe was a key figure in North Korean leadership, having served under Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, and Kim Jong Un. Remarkably, he was one of the seven top officials who rode in the hearse with Kim Jong Il’s casket in 2011, a testament to the confidence the current leader placed in him.
According to state-run media, Kim Jong Un paid Choe’s family a condolence call early on Sunday morning. Video captured Kim and the other members of the leadership team paying their respects in silence to the late official. Choe Thae Bok’s passing signals the end of an era and emphasizes the lasting contributions he made to North Korean governance over several generations.
